Beforeweturnourattentiontothebehaviorofthreetypesofmarginalcrops,letussetthestageonwulttoconfirmtheimplicationuresinTaiwanaccordingtothedegreetowhichtheirfarmingresourceswereaffectedbythesharerestriction,sothataprefectureofthehigherorderisexpectedtorespondwithgreaterproportionalchangesinthemarginalcrops,accordingtomytheoreticalpredictions.

Itshouldbeclearthatthedegreetowhichaprefecturewasaffectedbythesharerestrictiondependsontwofactors:(a)theproportionoffarmlandaffected,and(b)theinitialmarketrentalpercentage,sincetheflatratecontrolledtoa(a)and(b),c,Hwalien,c,togetherwiththeproportionateacreageofpaddyfieldsanddryland(notshown)determinethepercentagevaluesofcolumn2.

Sinceprefectureswithproportionallymorepaddyfieldswereassociatedwithahigherfrequencyoftenancy,andsincepaddyfieldswereassociatedwithhighermarketrentalpercentages,thevaluesincolumn3renderreliablecriteriafort,however,,SinchuandTaipeihadthehighestrentalpercentages;accordingtoanother,Taichungwasthemostfertile.[2]Thedisagreementstemsfromthefactthatnosourceisspeakingofaweightedaverageoftherentalpercentages,andheterogeneouslandwithd,Taipei,,ingroupIwehaveprefectureswherewearecertainthathigherrentalshadprevailed,andthatprivatelandresourceswereaffectedinthegreatestproportions.[3]Insimilarfashion,weplaceKaoshiungandTainaningroupII,andHwalien,Taitung,,whichoccupiedsmallareasinTaiwan,willbeexcludedbecauseofthemassiveputationsrequired.[4]Rankingbythecriteriaofmarketrentalpercentagesandproportionsofprivatelandaffecte,however,haveinformationonthenumberoffarmersaffected,whichwouldbethemoreappropriatemeasureoflaborresources.[5]
